Many faculty issues can be resolved simply by contacting a union steward. The steward can guide you through your contractual rights and offer suggestions for resolution with the administration. One of the main tools we have as members of a union is the formal grievance procedure. If the university is in violation of the contract, and the issue cannot be resolved informally, then a formal grievance can be filed, and the union will set up a meeting with university officials. This may take one or more meetings to resolve. The university and union may agree on an informal resolution to the issue. However, if no resolution is reached and the two parties continue to disagree, the case can be heard by a third-party arbiter as outlined in our contract. We also deal with Title IX complaints of gender-based harassment. If a faculty member has been accused of harassment, faculty are entitled to a union rep at their disciplinary meetings. Conversely, if a faculty member has experienced gender based harassment from anyone in the university, faculty should contact us and a New School Title IX Coordinator. Harassment, discrimination, a hostile work environment, or any sort of assault, is governed by university policy and of course all applicable laws. If you have been the victim of a crime, you can call the Special Victims Report Line at 646-610-7272. Faculty can also direct students to the university policy and student health services. Additionally, Starfish can be used to direct students to physical and mental health services at The New School. |
