NEW SCHOOL SHENS ENHANCED SEVERANCE
Enhanced Severance (Article XXXIV)
The union won provisions for enhanced severance in certain circumstances in Article XXXIV, Termination and Layoff Benefits and Severance Pay in the CBA. Since concerns about outsourcing or other steps leading to closure of one or both departments of SHS is what initially motivated unionization, the union bargained hard to get enhanced severance provisions in the event of subcontracting, outsourcing or other permanent closures. Compared to the university’s standard schedule (for non-unionized administrative workers) of payments starting at 2 weeks for less than 2 years of service and capped at 10 weeks for 10 or more years of service, SHENS won severance ranging from 4 weeks for less than 4 years of service and as much as 16 weeks for more than 12 years of service.
