Adjunct healthcare is a union-won benefit. After you work at NYU for one year, and if you have an assignment in the current year, most adjuncts can participate in an NYU sponsored health insurance plan with subsidies. Since 2019, adjuncts also have access to an NYU sponsored dental and subsidized plan and an unsubsidized vision plan. These plans are the same plans used by the full-time faculty and the students.
Health insurance signups only open once a year in late October for the following calendar year. This benefit will change significantly in the 2023-24 academic year for coverage beginning on January 1, 2024. A full description of our the healthcare benefit is available in our contract. Briefly, if you teach at least 40 contact hours a year you are eligible for unsubsidized coverage. For most adjuncts, if you teach at least 56-125 contact hours you will receive a 50 percent subsidy from the university. If you teach more than 126 contact hours in a year you will receive a 75 percent subsidy from the university. |
